Much attention has come to St. Mary’s College of Maryland for building its ‘‘yacht club” and boathouse not 25 feet off the St. Mary’s River on wetlands, fill dirt and on top of what was the likely point of first landing at St. Mary’s City. However, the real scandal is the hundreds of millions of dollars for new construction under President Maggie O’Brien’s tenure. The spending reminds me of a drunken sailor on liberty. Only difference is the sailor has to wait for his next paycheck. The college seems to have a never-ending supply of federal and state taxpayers’ dollars. They treat these grants, earmarks, etc. like they are Monopoly money. No, the dollars are not free. more...
While I applaud your July 30 front page article on the St. Mary’s County schools’ young driver safety initiative, I think that you should have mentioned the person who has led the charge on these issues for at least the last two years. St. Mary’s County’s community transportation safety program coordinator, Jackie Beckman, has been vigorously urging school administration and law enforcement to implement mandatory drive-safe presentations, parking privilege revocation, parental notification of traffic stops and the free use of Drive-Cam video monitoring. The results of her hard work will be a reduction in death, injury and collisions involving young drivers. more...
I was glad to see Peggy Bailey’s letter in the July 11 Enterprise. It brings to mind a question I’ve had for some time. Just what makes St. Mary’s City historic? Everything there is rebuilt, such as the rebuilt state house to the currently being rebuilt chapel. The only thing historic is the dirt it all sits on. more...
