Breast cancer survivors Laurie Jaffe, left, Alice Sinsel, Rosita Johnson, Barbara Ehrenstrom, Mary Dent and Jane Henderson, seated, recently participated in the American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Better program.

On May 10, the American Cancer Society offered its Look Good, Feel Better program to female cancer patients in Charles County.

Six ladies participated in the class to learn how to use makeup and skincare techniques to overcome the appearance-related effects of chemotherapy and radiation. It was an opportunity for the ladies to chat and carry on with other breast cancer survivors as well as compare notes on doctors and treatments. The class was held at the Hawthorne Center in La Plata and was guided by volunteer cosmetologist, Rachael Noel.

Also on hand for support was Roberta Kieliger, coordinator of the Look Good, Feel Better program in Charles County. She is a 12-year breast cancer survivor and coordinator of Sisters at Heart, a newly formed breast cancer support group meeting at the Richard R. Clark Senior Center in La Plata.

The next Look Good, Feel Better session will be heldJuly 12.

The Look Good, Feel Better program is offered through a collaboration among the American Cancer Society; the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation and the National Cosmetology Association. Classes and materials are provided free of charge to women in active cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society is looking for cosmetologists to assist in the program. Cosmetologists willing to volunteer evenings once or twice a year can call American Cancer Society Community Manager Donna Cunningham at 202-483-2600. For more information regarding registration, call MaryBeth Klick at the Charles County Health Department at 301-609-6932.
