Summer camps
NASA: Journey into Outer Space is a half-day science camp at the Capital Clubhouse in Waldorf. From Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program sends kids 5-12 on a quest for exploration. Comets, planets, stars, and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and participate in a rocket launch. Camp is available 8:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 4-8. Resident fee is $145; nonresidents $160.
Enjoy a wide range of activities such as basketball, soccer, ice skating, rock climbing and more at the Capital Clubhouse’s All Sports Camp for kids 6 and older. Session runs 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 11-15 and 18-22. Fee includes snacks and T-shirt. Full day resident fee is $175, nonresident, $90. Half day, resident fee $115, nonresident $130.
Daily fees are: resident $40,nonresident: $50. Half Day All Sports Camp is also available for kids 5-12. Extreme Baseball Summer Camp for kids 8 and older will be offered 8 a.m.-noon Aug. 4-8 at Capital Clubhouse. Pitching, hitting, catching, infield and outfield instruction are offered by top area coaches. Fast pitch softball for all skill levels by 5 Star Athletics. Resident fee is $175, nonresident, $190.
Beat the heat and have fun skating this summer on the cool ice at the Capital Clubhouse for our Summer Fun Skating Camp for kids 6-12. Camps include age- and skill-appropriate classes with professional instruction in basic skating skills plus special performance lessons for the end of week show. Camps also feature crafts and costuming for the performance. Campers should have some skating experience. Campers should bring fruit or other healthy snacks. No candy or chewing gum please. 12:30-4:30 p.m. July 21-25, Aug. 11-15 and 8 a.m.-noon Aug. 18-22. Half day resident fee is $160, nonresidents, $175. PowerSkates Advanced Figure Skating Camp is for kids 8 and older. Session will be held 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 4-8
Get a jump on the competition at the coolest camp in the hottest month. For skill levels from Basic 8 through Intermediate. Camp includes training in jumps, spins, moves in the field, footwork and choreography. With off-ice instruction, skaters will participate in dance and conditioning classes as well as video instruction. Resident fee is $285, nonresident: $300. Register two weeks prior to start (add $15 late fee after deadline).
Events for toddlersand younger children
Bring the little ones, 3-6, to Pee Wee Parties at Nanjemoy Community Center. Each theme will have different activities. Please register one week prior to each party. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Enjoy a Pirate Party 10-11 a.m. July 23. Register one week before the event. Fee, $3, nonresidents, $5.
Toddler Computer Club helps you prepare your children, 3-5, for the future. Nanjemoy Community Center’s classes introduce basic use of a computer while reinforcing counting, ABCs, colors and more. Software includes games children will love to play. Space is limited, register early. Program is available each Friday from 10-10:30 a.m. July 25-Aug 15. Register by July 18. Residents $5, nonresidents $8.
Craft classes
Design a birdhouse at Nanjemoy Community Center 11 a.m.-noon July 29. Open to all ages. Assemble and paint a birdhouse to hang in your yard. All supplies are included. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Register by July 21. Residents, $3, nonresidents, $5.
Kids 8-12 can tap into their creative side at Nanjemoy Community Center’s Kids Craft Club. Each session will create a different craft. Crafts include beading, painting, coloring and more. All supplies provided. Register by July 18 to ensure we have enough supplies. Mondays, 6-7 p.m. Aug. 4-25. Residents, $15, nonresidents fee: $18.
Tie-dye Fun for kids 10 and older will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. Aug 13, at Nanjemoy Community Center. Bring a white, previously washed T-shirt and get creative. Create a wild shirt using various tie-dye techniques. We provide everything you need except the shirt. Come have fun and be prepared to get a little messy. Must register by Aug. 4. Clubs
Kids 6-12, come hang out at the Nanjemoy Community Center after school. The afternoon will consist of homework help and independent and structured activities. Fun stuff will include games, crafts, video games, movies, contests and more. Free program runs each 4-6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, beginning Aug. 25.
Kids age 6-12, come enjoy pizza and a drink for dinner followed by fun activities at Nanjemoy Community Center’s Kids Club Night. Activities will include games, crafts, contests, movies, and more. Please register by the Monday before the event. Residents, $3 in advance, $5 night of; nonresidents, $5 in advance, $7 night of. 5:30-8:30 p.m. July 25.

Bring the whole family to the Nanjemoy Community Center for Family Game Night each Tuesday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 12-Sept. 30. Play some classic board games or try something new. Compete against other families for bragging rights. Games and light refreshments provided. All children must be accompanied by an adult. This event is free.
Special events
National Night Out Against Crime will be celebrated 6-9 p.m. Aug. 5. Nanjemoy Community Center is joining forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 25th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. NCC will open its doors with entertainment, free food, games, activities, door prizes and much more. The Western Charles County Community Association will also be holding its annual ‘‘School Supply Giveaway” for school-aged children. Enjoy an evening with family and friends at the center.
Celebrate Charles County’s 350th Anniversary by participating in a Heritage Photo Scavenger Hunt involving sites in Charles County. Stop by the Nanjemoy Community Center Aug. 1–25 to pick up the list of scavenger hunt locations and the rules for the contest. Then head out and start snapping your photos. You take the pictures based on our clues! Photos may be presented printed or on a photo CD. Submitted photos must be originals taken for this contest. To participate, complete a registration form and submit to any community center or the Department of Community Services no later than Aug. 25. Join us at the Nanjemoy Community Center 6-7 p.m. Sept. 8 to submit your photo entry. Enjoy free refreshments while staff reviews the entries. The person⁄family with the most correct or accurate photo submissions will win a prize. In the event of a tie, a winner will be chosen at random from eligible entries. Join us in a Growing Tradition sponsored by the Charles County Department of Community Services. Celebrate the amazing heritage of Nanjemoy at the eighth Annual Nanjemoy Heritage Day noon-3 p.m. Sept. 20. This free event is open to all ages. This event is part of the celebrations in honor of the anniversary of Charles County’s 350 years of history.
Enjoy a parade, live music, crafts for the kids, face painting, local artists and heritage displays, moon bounce, classic cars, games and much more. Refreshments and souvenir T-shirts will be available for purchase. This event is sponsored by the Charles County Department of Community Services.

Craft fair
Annual craft fair at the Richard R. Clark Senior Center, hosted by the Charles County Department of Community Services, sponsored by the Clark Senior Center Council. The annual event will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 27 at the center, 1210 Charles St., La Plata. Gift items, art and more will be on display by local crafters and artists. All proceeds from this event benefit the senior population of Charles County. For details or directions, call 301-934-5423.
Sports and fitness programs
Free fitness program at Nanjemoy Community Center. NuStep machine, crunch boards, recumbent bike, Hoist single stack gym and treadmills. On-your-own program. Must attend at least one scheduled free fitness orientation. Call the center for details. Open to 18 and older. This is an ongoing program held each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. and each Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Teen Fit is for teens 13-17 at Nanjemoy Community Center. Participate in group and individual exercise. Learn proper techniques and healthy eating habits. Parent or guardian permission is required. Please consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. Register by July 14. Program runs 6-7 p.m. each Tuesday, July 22-Aug. 26. Residents, $10, nonresidents $12.
Yoga for Heart Health at Nanjemoy Community Center is available for adults 18 and older. Each class is geared toward all levels and focuses on classic yoga poses. This class is designed to increase flexibility, strength, and heart health. Sponsored by Suburban Hospital and National Institutes of Health. Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.
Free program runs 10:15-11:15 a.m. each Thursday through Sept. 4.
Sports special events
Nanjemoy Community Center’s Olympics event for all ages will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 16 at the center. Teams will compete in Olympic-themed sports and activities. Medals awarded to first, second, and third place. Winners will receive their medals at the closing ceremonies. Teams consist of four members. One member must be 18 or older. Lunch will be provided. Registration deadline is Aug. 6. Residents, $20per team, nonresidents, $25 per team.
Indoor community pools
Open swim is held at each indoor community pool during pool hours listed with center information. The cost is free for age 2 and younger, $4 for 3-12, $5 for 13-59, $4 for 60 and older. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Group rates are available for eight or more but require a reservation be made at least two weeks prior. Punch cards and pool memberships are also available.
Join us at the indoor community pools at North Point and Lackey for water aerobics. Classes are low-impact with emphasis on stretching, cardiovascular, and resistance exercises. Participants will perform exercises using the natural resistance of water with various pieces of equipment. Participants do not need to know how to swim, but they should be comfortable in the water. Call for a class schedule.
Skate, Swim and Everything in Between Camp will start each day at the Capital Clubhouse. Kids 7-13 will participate in a wide range of activities such as basketball, soccer, ice skating, rock climbing and more. After lunch, campers will travel to North Point pool for an afternoon of supervised water activities and games. Participants must be able to swim one length of the pool (25 yards) and tread water for 30 seconds. Campers receive a camp T-shirt and are required to bring a bathing suit, towel, tennis shoes, and appropriate clothing for ice skating as well as a bag lunch and drink each day. Campers are to be dropped off at the Capital Clubhouse and picked up from the North Point Pool. Child must test swimming skills prior to registration. No before or after care. Residents, $180, nonresidents, $190. Program is offered 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 4-8. Register by July 14.
Water sports camp focuses on water safety, swimming skills, diving skills and other aquatic games and activities. Participants will be in the water in the morning for instructional swimming skills in beginner, intermediate and advanced groups, and again in the afternoon for supervised games and activities. Campers will also participate in outdoor sports and games. Each day will include a daily water safety topic with organized activities. Campers receive a camp T-shirt and are required to bring a bathing suit, two towels, change of clothes, tennis shoes, a bag lunch and drink. Participants must be able to swim one length of the pool (25yards) and tread water for 30 seconds. Child must test swimming skills prior to registration. No before or after care. Open to kids 7-13. Residents $150 per week nonresidents, $160. Session will be offered at Lackey pool 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 11-15. Register by July 28.
Water Exploration for Special Populations will be offered at North Point Pool. The class is specifically designed for children with physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities who want to learn how to be safe in, on, and around the water. Participants will learn water safety skills and basic swimming skills. Each class includes independent, guided discovery time in the water with a parent or a responsible adult. Instructor led group activities also included. A parent or responsible adult must accompany children in the water. Open to 5 and older with a parent or responsible adult. The resident fee is $55 per session, nonresidents, $60. Session 2 is scheduled for 11-11:45 a.m. July 15-Aug. 7, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Swim lessons are currently being offered at all pools, outdoor and indoor.
Resident, $55, nonresidents, $60. Sessions consist of eight 35-minute classes.
Each session includes one day of basic water safety skills. Children should be able to perform all skills of the previous level before moving on to a higher level.
For safety reasons, all class sizes are limited to a maximum number of participants. Classes may be canceled due to low enrollment.
Instructors may move children to a different level class if the child is unable to participate in the skill level of the registered class.
Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
