A Waldorf firefighter was taken to the hospital, and a woman was flown to a trauma center Tuesday after a four-vehicle pileup involving a fire engine.
The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department engine had been returning to Station 12 from a call and was in the left turn lane from Berry Road to Bunker Hill Road when the driver of a Lexus lost control and collided with the back of the truck, reported police and Capt. Jeff Duer, public information officer for the fire department.
The Lexus continued into the roadway, and a pickup truck hit the car, according to police. Another vehicle then collided with the pickup, said Diane Richardson, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.
Sheriff's officers responded to the accident scene at about 10:07 a.m.
The driver of the Lexus, a woman in her late 20s or early 30s, was trapped in her car after the crash, Duer said. When she was freed, the woman was flown from the crash scene to Prince George's Hospital Center, police reported.
A firefighter was taken to an area hospital for evaluation and was treated and released, according to Duer.
Richardson said the drivers of the two other vehicles were transported by ambulance to Civista Medical Center and were being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
The fire engine is out of service and will need repairs, but as of Wednesday morning, the cost of fixing it hadn't been determined, Duer said.
The Traffic Operations Unit of the Charles County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.
