St. Mary's County is changing all the time.
Time was, this region's economy was based on tobacco, crabs and oysters. But life in the early 21st century is quite different for most residents. Advanced technology is now the county's chief economic engine. Patuxent River Naval Air Station is a premier site of military aviation, continuing to spark the growth of defense contractors and many other associated businesses.
Because of this, people from all over the world are now calling St. Mary's County home. They live side by side with families who have been here for generations. Both have many things in common. They require local government services. Their children go to school. They may want to get involved in community activities. They want to relax and enjoy life.
This guide is intended to point people in the right direction for all of this and more. And as the state marks its 375th birthday this year, St. Mary's, as the county where Maryland got its start, will host special events to celebrate its role in the state's beginnings, giving residents even more activities from which to choose.
