Lions win again

Friday, March 27, 2009

The Charles County Lions semi-pro football team shut out the Baltimore Bulls on the Bulls' home field in Butler, 13-0 on March 21, giving the Lions their second win of the season.

The offense, led by Tyler McConnell, chalked up 170 yards in the passing game but a mere 18 yards on the ground.

The Lions' first score followed an interception by defensive back Cameron Fuller, who ran the ball back 35 yards to the 3-yard line, setting up the touchdown for Brandon Watson to punch in.

It was anybody's ball game until the fourth quarter when with seven minutes to go, Lions defensive back Derrick Manning intercepted the ball. Three plays later, McConnell threw a 49-yard pass to Travis Savoy for the Lions second score of the game.

Cedric Thomas, Clyde Jones, Rashad Yarborough, T. J. Riley and Joey Williamson each had sacks, while Yarborough recovered two fumbles. Donald Knight and Thomas each had nine tackles, while Averill Butler had eight and Jones had 12. Terry Barnes, Cameron Fuller, Travis McConnell, Yarborough and Williamson shared the burden with four tackles each. Will Johnson received the hit of the week award, tackling a guy twice his size so hard his helmet came off. Earl Monroe and Geovaun Brown knocked down passes.

The Lions' game will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chaney Field against the Prince George's Knights.
