Man fatally shoots wife, self

Friday, May 16, 2008

Police say a Lusby resident killed his wife and then himself in Chesapeake Ranch Estates on Tuesday night.

When police arrived on the scene after responding to a 911 call from a CRE resident around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, they found a woman and a man, both shot with a shotgun, a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office’s press release states.

While on the way to the scene, dispatchers alerted the police that shots had been fired, and they discovered the victim, Juanita Bathsheba Evans, 31, outside the Big Bear Lane residence, lying on the ground next to the home with one gunshot wound to her chest, according to the police report. She was alive when they found her, but died later, shortly after arriving at Calvert Memorial Hospital.

A canine track by the sheriff’s office led deputies several houses down the street on Big Bear Lane where the suspect of the shooting was discovered lying in the driveway. Robert Douglas McGinty, 33, Evans’ husband and also of Lusby, was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the press release stated.

Evans filed for divorce on May 2 in the Calvert County Circuit Court, and gave a Prince Frederick address, according to judicial records. The two were recently separated, but no protective order was filed, reports state.

McGinty’s judicial record shows that he pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and attempting to drive while impaired on July 23, 2007, in the Calvert County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to serve four years with all but one suspended, and his sentence was reconsidered this past January, according to court records. McGinty, with a recorded Bonanza Trail address in Lusby, was also a defendant in an ongoing foreclosure case that lists a statement of indebtedness of $203,265, according to judicial records.

The Calvert Investigative Team is continuing the investigation.
