Children had fun with reading Dr. Seuss -style last week during Dr. Seuss Books-n-Such camp held at the College of Southern Maryland's La Plata campus.

As part of the Kids and Teens College, students were given the opportunity to learn about reading, writing and math skills all under the theme of Dr. Seuss and his many characters.

Participants had a Seussabration where they made Dr. Seuss's "Cat in the Hat" hats, ate cake, played games and reviewed all the things learned during the week.

After asking his mother if she knew Dr. Seuss's name, Samuel Chernoff, 5, proudly said, "Theodore Seuss Geisel."

"I promise to read day and night," Samuel told a reporter when reciting the reading oath rhyme he learned at camp.

Naming off several books and movies based on the books, Samuel said, "Yertle the Turtle" was his favorite Seuss creation.

Janet Ryan led the class for the first time this summer and said she had a great time learning and exploring Dr. Seuss with the children.

Garret Cox, 5, was always excited to share with his family what he learned, according to his mother.

"[Dr Seuss Books–n-Such] was run very well. He came home full of energy talking about his day and how much fun he had," Amy Cox said.

The College of Southern Maryland holds Kids' and Teens College at all three Southern Maryland campuses, and children and teens can sign up for a number of week-long courses. Courses or camps for children include subjects from Dr Seuss Books-n-Such to sports and slimy science.
