The Southern Maryland Fierce fastpitch softball program recorded a win in its first tournament of the summer season topping the field at the Charm City Challenge at Bachman Sports Complex in Glen Burnie on May 23 and 24. The team lost its first game, 2-1, and then never looked back, outscoring its next six opponents 46-9.

Led by the pitching of Shelby Windsor, Katie Delapaz and Jessica Mattia, the girls dominated the 16-U field holding by opposing offenses to a mere 1 1/2 runs per game. Hitting standouts included Windsor, who hit the game-winning home run for the championship, Taylor Calvert, Karlee Winzenburg, Tori Kibler, Gabrielle Morgan, Jenny Subocz, Kaitlyn Mattia and Kaylynn Balleaux.

Outstanding defense in the outfield by Meagan Hasson and Kibler along with a nice grab from Amber Fiorilla, on a play that injured her knee, that kept the other teams off the scoreboard. Kristin Baione led the team with six stolen bases for weekend as well.

The Fierce is a Southern Maryland team made up of players from six different high schools and managed by Bob Opiekun along with Sue Subocz and Mike Mattia. You can follow their tournaments this summer at www.eteamz.com/somdfierce. Sponsor information can be found at team mom@fiercesoftball.com.
