Authorities discovered the body of James Arley Hysell, 75, inside a burning truck in Waldorf on Tuesday night, but sheriff's officers aren't sure how he died or how the pickup caught fire, according to police.
Some fishermen at a lake close to Forgotten Farm Place called emergency personnel at about 8:13 p.m. to report that a truck was on fire, said state fire marshals and Diane Richardson, spokeswoman for the Charles County Sheriff's Office. When firefighters extinguished the blaze, they found the body in the driver's seat of the 2001 Ford Ranger, which was parked in the middle of the roadway, Richardson said.
Investigators identified the body as Hysell only after an investigation. Hysell's body was too badly burned to definitively determine even the sex, Richardson said.
The autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will try to determine Hysell's cause and manner of death, according to Richardson.
Authorities are still examining the Ford to discover how the fire started, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal Joseph Zurolo. He said he couldn't comment on whether any flammable liquids were found in the truck.
Police are conducting an investigation, but said in a press release Thursday that foul play is not suspected.
