Government has no business building stadiums

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

I was interested in the letter to the editor from Lewis Twine [‘‘Entertaining shows with a baseball game included,” Maryland Independent, July 18].

Enjoy the entertainment, Lewis, because you (we) are paying for it. Meanwhile, children attend classes in trailers and sick people have to pay for ambulance rides. But who cares, when we can have air guitar contests, three-legged races and hoagie throwing contests?

I love baseball but I pledged to never attend a game at Regency Furniture Stadium since I don’t think government has any business building sports stadiums. I was so happy when baseball returned to Washington, but I will never attend a game at Nationals Park for the same reason.

I love country music, but I will not attend the upcoming concert at Regency Furniture Stadium in September.

When FedEx Field was built, Jack Kent Cooke paid for it out of his own pocket. Abe Pollin paid to build the Verizon Center. Here in Charles County, our commissioners built Regency field (using our money). In my view, this is an outrage, and I doubt that I am the only citizen who feels this way. Maybe by the time the 2010 elections roll around it will be clear what a money-loser Regency Furniture Stadium is. Maybe by then we can say goodbye to the current crop of commissioners.
