While I applaud your July 30 front page article on the St. Mary’s County schools’ young driver safety initiative, I think that you should have mentioned the person who has led the charge on these issues for at least the last two years. St. Mary’s County’s community transportation safety program coordinator, Jackie Beckman, has been vigorously urging school administration and law enforcement to implement mandatory drive-safe presentations, parking privilege revocation, parental notification of traffic stops and the free use of Drive-Cam video monitoring. The results of her hard work will be a reduction in death, injury and collisions involving young drivers.
Jackie and the other Southern Maryland community transportation safety program coordinators have worked very hard on these issues and have managed to obtain a grant from the Maryland State Highway Safety Office for the use of the Drive-Cam devices. The response from parents has been very slow in this regard. Perhaps more information should be made public by your newspaper.
