Coaches wantedat McDonough
McDonough High School is in search of varsity and junior varsity field hockey coaches, as well as a JV volleyball coach.

La Plata preseason meeting
La Plata High School will hold a fall sports preseason meeting for students and parents at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 in the auditorium.
All fall sports athletes and their parents are urged to attend this informational meeting. Tryouts for fall sports will begin on Aug.16.
The eligibility clearance process will be discussed. Eligibility is based on the fourth quarter GPA and attendance from the 2007-08 school year.
Coaches will be available to provide information specific to their sport.
Anyone trying out for a fall sport must have a current physical on file, and be cleared through the athletic director’s office prior to tryouts. There are no exceptions.
Westlake needs coaches
Westlake High School is looking for a head JV and varsity volleyball coaches, a head JV field hockey coach, a head girls varsity soccer coach, an assistant cheerleading coach and a girls cross country coach.

All forms can be picked up in the main office to be turned into before Aug. 15.Ê
The first day of practice for all sports is Aug. 16.

Physicals offered
Charles County Public Schools is offering sports physicals to their student-athletes from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at Thomas Stone High School.
Athletes should reserve their place by contacting the athletic director of their home school. The front side of theÊdesignated physical form must be completed and signed by a parent and accompaniedÊwith the fee of $25 (cash only) at the time of registration. Athletes will not be seen by the doctor without the required materials.Ê
Physical forms and permission forms may be obtained from the athletic director or home school front office. Physicals will be limited to the first 100 students and will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, contact Jan Johnson at jljohnson@ccboe.com.
Summer sailing camp
The Southern Maryland Sailing Association is again offering its summer sailing camp for youngsters ages 8 to 18. Activities, including on-water instruction and on-land activities will be based at SMSA’s clubhouse on Solomons Harbor.
One-week sessions for various skill levels are being offered through Aug. 15. The camp is held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with a special camp designed for teenagers wishing to practice for competitive dinghy racing being offered Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. A maximum of 10 students will be allowed for each session.
Campers will learn basic sailing and boat handling skills, while more advanced kids will learn racing and performance techniques. All children will learn about water and boating safety, boat preparation and seamanship
All participants will receive a camp T-shirt, and a copy of the American Red Cross’ ‘‘Start Sailing Right.” Instruction will be by at least two counselors, and will be led by a U.S. Sailing certified instructor. Campers must pass a basic swim test at the beginning of the week.
Children must bring their own lunches, sunscreen, sun glasses and lifejacket.
The fee is $250 to $265 per child per week with SMSA members receiving a $50 discount.

Goalkeeping summer camps
Gretton Goalkeeping will offer its sixth annual Summer Soccer Goalkeeper Series through the week of Aug. 18.
The camps run Tuesdays through Fridays each week in the early evening hours at various locations in Southern Maryland. All ages and skill levels welcome. Field player training offered as well by separate field player instructor.

Cheerleaders needed
Do you want to be a cheerleader, but aren’t ready to join a team? Come learn the skills of cheerleading, from basic to advanced cheers, as well as jumps and stunts.Ê Registrations are now being accepted at Elite Gymnastics & Recreation Center located at 2745 Old Washington Road, Waldorf.
It’s open to kids age six and older. Programs are offered each Monday as follows from 6 to 7 p.m. (Cheer 1), 7 to 8 p.m. (Cheer 2) and 8 to 9 p.m. (Cheer 3). This is an ongoing program. The resident fee is $75, the non-resident fee isÊ$76.

Baseball camps
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs professional baseball teamÊis offering four 2-day baseball camps this summer, which feature professional instruction from Blue Crabs players and coaches, an autograph session with Blue Crabs players, two tickets and on-field recognition to the game on the night the camp concludes, an in-camp home run derby and a Blue Crabs T-shirt.

Football officialswanted
The Washington District Football Officials Association is seeking game officials for the 2008 season.
The association provides officials for high school games in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, the Washington, D.C. public schools as well as Calvert, Charles, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Queen Anne’s and St. Mary’s counties.
No experience is required. Rules study and on-field training sessions are starting now.
