Cpl. Gary Holt, the juvenile intervention officer at the school, coordinated three events at the school in May including a bike-a-thon, walk-a-thon and T-shirt sales.
Officers, students, family members, faculty, and business and community members participated in the fundraisers. ‘‘All of the students were eager to raise money for the Special Olympics. They had fun and look forward to participating next year,” said Holt in a sheriff’s office press release.
Coffey said that it’s important for the sheriff’s office to take a role in coordinating these types of events with students. ‘‘As officers, we have the opportunity to serve as role models and teach children the importance of getting involved. Cpl. Holt did a great job rallying the students together with our partners in the business and community to make this fundraiser a success,” Coffey said in the release.
CCSO Sgts. C. Rye and A. Proctor, along with Holt, joined the following students in the bike-a-thon: Chris Harley, Adam Chambers, Ashley Caywood, Brent Corrine, Brandon Gutierez, Jonathan Exline, Anthony Acquaviva, Lorin Smith, James Shires, Travis Crowe, Alyson Lowery, Brittany Cusick and Kristi, Chris and Emily Nelson. Participating faculty included Kenneth Schroeck, Laura Coffren, Jill Matthews, Gayle Kraus, Vickie Tevis and Raymond Lancaster. Pizza Hot Line and Coca-Cola of La Plata provided food and drinks.
