S. Ralph Smialowicz, 89, Rahway, N.J.

He was born Oct. 26, 1918, in Newark, N.J., and lived in Bloomfield, N.J., from 1941 until moving to Rahway in 1955.

He was a loving father of eight, grandfather ‘‘Dziadzi” of 11 and great-grandfather of five. He enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Mr. Smialowicz was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Pampa, Texas. He was employed for 22 years by Welin Davit Boat Corp. in Perth Amboy, N.J., and then by General Motors at Hyatt Bearing in Clark, N.J., for 21 years before retiring in 1981.

He was a communicant of St. Mary R.C. Church in Rahway where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. Mr. Smialowicz was also a member of the Retired Men’s Club, the American Association of Retired Persons Chapter 607 in Rahway; the Joseph Poniatowski Association, Bloomfield; and the 5th Ward Democratic Club in Linden, N.J.

Mr. Smialowicz was preceded in death by his parents, Waclaw Smialowicz and Wladyslawa Trynoski; brothers, Charles, Narcy, Chester and Walter; sisters, Lottie, Jean and Helen. He was preceded in death in March by his wife of 66 years, Helen Danielczuk Smialowicz; and his son, Stephen, in 1976.

He is survived by his sons, Dr. Ralph Smialowicz of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Paul Smialowicz of Colts Neck, N.J.; five daughters, Sister Mary Angelica CSSF of Lodi, N.J., Mary Vasquez of Naples, Fla., Theresa Abernethy of Rahway, Cecelia Dunay of White Plains and Catherine McBride of Washington Township, N.J.; grandchildren, Eric, Paul and Mark Vasquez, Amy Smialowicz, Christopher and Kimberly Dunay, Jennifer and Laura McBride and Nicole, Raymond and Jessica Abernethy; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Megan, Jonathan, Marissa and Justin Vasquez.
