Funds for Friends is a program created by Greene Turtle President and CEO Michael Sanford in 2005.
Organizations reserve a selected Tuesday to host the Funds for Friends event in which they decorate the restaurant with their organization’s colors and logos. They also recruit members, friends and family of their organization to attend.
In return, The Greene Turtle donates 10 percent of the day’s receipts to the organization. The event featured a March of Dimes display table, a 50⁄50 raffle and a slideshow on many of the restaurant’s TVs.
Hall joins Spring Dell Center staff
Paige Hall recently accepted the position of public relations coordinator for the Spring Dell Center in La Plata.
‘‘I plan on making a huge impact right off the bat,” said Hall when asked of her future PR plans for Spring Dell Center in a press release.
Her work history focuses mainly on child care so it is no surprise that one of her goals is to create a program designed to educate middle-school aged children about people with disabilities.
‘‘It’s extremely important for people to have an understanding of various disabilities and how people with disabilities are no different than you and I. I think this education should begin early in a child’s life,” she said in the release.
She would like to have the program up and running in the early months of 2009. For now, she is busy with the annual Spring Dell auction.
This year Spring Dell’s 15th annual auction will be held at the Jaycees center Nov. 21. The auction serves as the agency’s most important fundraiser of the year. Last year’s event brought in $43,000.
‘‘Hopefully that amount with increase this year,” Hall said in the release. The money is critical to support programs offered by Spring Dell Center.
Spring Dell is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting disabled individuals in Charles County for more than 40 years.
The agency assists more than180 individuals annually through various support programs such as vocational services, employment training and job placement, supervised residential housing, transportation and advocacy.
The agency also operates five resale stores, Hooks-n-Hangers I and the Furniture Store in La Plata, West Side Thrift in Bryans Road, Use It Again in Waldorf and Hooks-n-Hangers II in Charlotte Hall.
Arts alliance offersfree painting party
Back by popular demand, the Charles County Arts Alliance will be offering a free interactive acrylics painting party Aug. 17, with sessions beginning at noon and 3 p.m. It will be held at the Corner Studio in La Plata. Hosted by Chroma teaching artist Julie Starling, (www.juliestarling.com), artists will understand, explore and exploit the revolutionary possibilities of interactive painting. Chroma will supply the paint and media necessary, but asks thatÊattendees supply their own surfaces, brushes and water basins.
The innovative features of interactive painting allow artists to control the painting process.ÊBecause the paint doesn’t form a skin, it offers broad appeal to all types of artists. Using only water during a normal painting session, interactive gives artists plenty of time for blending, feathering, edging, etc., and even allows touch-dry paint to be reworked, revealed, shaped and blended.
Interested artists may sign up for a session, at either noon to 2:30 p.m. or 3 to 5:30 p.m.
Register by Aug. 7. Call 301-392-5900, or e-mail info@charlescountyarts.org.
