North Point bus driver assaulted

17-year-old disciplined over end-of-day attack

Friday, Oct. 30, 2009

A bus driver at North Point High School was assaulted by a student just after dismissal last week.

According to Charles County Public Schools spokeswoman Katie O'Malley-Simpson, the man asked a 17-year-old student to sit down and the student allegedly did not. O'Malley-Simpson said the student allegedly went to get off the bus and before exiting, assaulted the driver.

O'Malley Simpson said the student was removed from the bus and police were notified of the incident.

The driver, whose name was not released, had injuries causing him to take time off from his driving duties. According to O'Malley-Simpson, the driver came back to work Wednesday.

The driver has been providing transportation for Charles County Public Schools for four years.

O'Malley-Simpson said the school system disciplined the student, and police are considering action as well.

Specific details regarding disciplinary actions are not released, according to school policy, but the student code of conduct for Charles County Public Schools states that in an assault of school staff discipline actions that can be enforced are up to and including expulsion from school.

O'Malley-Simpson said that while bus drivers are contracted out from other companies, they are considered school staff while they are working for the school system.
