Travis Alexander Cross, 17, Mechanicsville

Travis Alexander "Gruntman" Cross, 17, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Leonardtown died Oct. 27, 2009, in Avenue.

He was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County and was a senior at Chopticon High School. He loved his dog, Blackie, whom he had for 15 years as well as his two guinea pigs, Precious and Sweety.

He enjoyed bass fishing at Gilbert Run Park and four-wheeling in the woods around his home with his friend, David.

He also enjoyed his engineering class, air brush art and keeping a top-notch green lawn. He was an avid woodworker and computer whiz.

Born May 28, 1992, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Thomas Edwin Jr. and Victoria Cobb Cross of Mechanicsville.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary Hall Cross and Kelsey Cobb; and uncle, John Robert Cobb.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Thomas E. Cross Sr. of Lexington Park and Louise Cobb of Mechanicsville; aunts, Carol Lynn Seegars of Sarasota, Fla., and her son, Paul Seegars of Springfield, Va., Kay and her husband, Wayne Gillispie of Arborville, W.Va., Brenda and her husband, Jack Varney of Rio, W.Va., Mary Cobb-Longo of Bradenton, Fla., Sherry and her husband, Vince Gazzo of Anna Marie Island, Fla., Cindi Couchenour of Pahrump, Nev., and Linda Wirth of Indian Head; uncles, David Cobb of Sarasota, Robert B. Cross of Clements and his daughter, Carrie Lynn Cross of Melbourne, Fla.; first cousins, Rueben, Brady, Elliot, Sidney, Tammy, Jackie, Jill, Beverly, David, Johanna, Rachel, Alexis, Max, Katie and Robbie; and 14 second cousins.

Visitation and prayers were held Oct. 29 at Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home chapel, Leonardtown, where a service will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 30. The Rev. William Gurnee will officiate. Burial will take place at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown.

Pallbearers will be David Saavedra, Quentin Leatherman, Andrew Guy, David Quade, Joseph Rhoades and Joseph Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be Randall Powell, Gary Norris and Robert Swann.
