Sierra Club sets Mattawoman paddle

Friday, Nov. 6, 2009

The Maryland Sierra Club will hold a paddle along Mattawoman Creek on Sunday to raise support and awareness about the threatened stream.

Local Sierra Clubbers will take to the water in an effort to highlight the wetland's amenities and show what could be lost if the throughway receives approval to break ground.

"We want to bring attention to Mattawoman Creek from people across the state," said Laurel Imlay, coordinator for the Maryland chapter of the Sierra Club.

The Maryland chapter has scheduled another paddle for Nov. 15 because of the outpouring of support for this weekend's event.

Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., 90 club members, club outings leaders and the public will be on the water. Imlay said there are also bike trails to explore and fishing along the riverbank for those who would rather stay ashore.

After the paddle there will be a potluck lunch until 2:30 p.m. The event will take place at 108 Mattingly Ave. in Indian Head. E-mail laurel.imlay@sierra.org.
